Gold Fields Ghana, operators of the Tarkwa and Damang mines in the Western region of Ghana on Thursday, 21st April, 2011, made a presentation to various groups and organizations serving the interests of the deprived and promoting the sustainable development of the environment.Beneficiaries of the GH₵25,000 support include the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GH₵6,000), towards the society’s small scale Basic School Chalk Production Enterprise Project; The Rafiki Satellite Village for Orphaned Children (GH₵5,400).Other beneficiaries are the Lion’s Club of Legon, towards the refitting of the Eye Clinic at the Legon Hospital; the Volta River Authority towards their 50th anniversary celebrations schools sensitization activities; the Ghana Mine Workers Union and the Ghana Wildlife Society towards their Endangered Species Fence Initiative for conservation and education of the youth in deprived schools and communities nationwide.At a short ceremony held at the Gold Fields Ghana corporate office in Accra, the Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainable Development, Mrs. Pamela Djamson-Tettey, congratulated the beneficiaries on their selection, explaining that the selection process was based on the criteria of sustainability.
She said, "Gold Fields has a track record for leading in sustainable gold mining. Sustainability isn’t just about doing a few projects on the side, and saying we have done our bit for society. For us at Gold Fields it means making sure first and foremost that our operations can stand the test of time. That we can operate in an environment where we can be proud of what we do each and every day for the benefit of our employees, for shareholders, for communities around our operations, and also for the countries in which we operate’’.“Gold Fields Ghana is proud to be associated with your efforts in improving the quality of life in our society and we will continue to focus our support in the key areas of Education, Health, Water, Sports, and Environmental Conservation.”On behalf of all the recipients of the donations, Ms. Gladys A. Odoi, General Director – Board of Social Responsibility & Rural Development of the Methodist Church of Ghana, who received the donation on behalf of the Rafiki Satellite Village for Orphaned Children, thanked Gold Fields Ghana for their generous donation towards a worthy cause.Gold Fields Ghana is the leading gold mining company in Ghana. Last year alone, the company invested approximately US$2.5 million dollars on community infrastructural and development projects within its catchment areas.Additionally, Gold Fields Ghana has been the headline sponsor of the senior national soccer team, the Black Stars for the past seven years.
