The Nassara Youth group of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it believes former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings can find the murderers of the late Ya Na Yakubu Andani for justice to prevail in Dagbon.
The group said Nana Konadu would not disappoint Dagomba’s like President John Evans Atta Mills did when he failed to honour his campaign promise of bringing to book the murderers of the overlord of Dagbon.
President Mills in the 2008 elections promised to pursue the murderers of Ya Na and bring them to face justice. Fifteen persons who were arrested in connection with the crime were acquitted by the Accra Fast Track High Court last month on the grounds that the prosecution failed to provide indisputable evidence that indicated the accused persons were culpable for the murder of the Ya Na. The development brought great anger to the Andanis – descendants of the Ya Na – and they threatened to withdraw their support for the ruling NDC government.
The government has since filed an appeal against the High Court’s ruling.
On Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Monday, the secretary of Nassara Youth Club Amadu Moctare Tarib said in an interview that Dagbon youths are disappointed in President Mills and his government for reneging on its promise and are therefore throwing their weight behind Nana Konadu – who has declared her intention in contesting President Mills for the flagbearership slot of the NDC.
The Nassara group as well as other pro-NDC youth groups had earlier cautioned the President ahead of his visit to Tamale on Tuesday not to step foot in the region, saying Mills has lost popularity there.
Amadu Moctare said the Nassara youths’ belief in the former first lady’s ability to give them justice stems from the fact that she and her husband former President Rawlings had consistently criticised the Mills-government in the manner it handled matters related with finding the murderers of their king.
“We are of the view that when the woman (Nana Konadu)is given the nod she can find the killers of Ya Na.
“We are not ready to support President Mills until the killers of Ya Na are found,” Amadu maintained.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Secretary of the NDC Omar Yussif Alhassan has insisted President Mills will visit Tamale as planned, adding that all is set for his arrival.
He described as unfortunate resistance by some youth groups at the President’s visit but urged the public to discount such news because there are many more youth groups in Tamale who love Mills and want to be associated with him.
Omar Yusif added there is no cause for alarm and that the environment is conducive for the President’s visit, adding, “Tomorrow, Tamale will be in a frenzy.”
