Mr Isaac Owusu Oduro, a staff of the Environmental Protection Agency, has been elected as a member of the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
He is among five members elected at the UN Headquarters in New York on June 14 to represent Africa on the Commission.
The rest are from Cameroon, Nigeria, Mauritius and Seychelles.
A release issued to the GNA on Tuesday said the Legal Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ghana Mission in New York co-ordinated the efforts which resulted in Mr Oduro's election.
Mr Oduro holds an MSC degree in Applied Geology from the Friendship University in Moscow, Russia, and Certificate in Strategic Management from Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.
He has also attended several courses and workshops on environment, geology and water resources.
The UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) is a 21-member body of experts in Geology, Geophysics and Hydrography.
The Commission derives its existence from the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of which Ghana is a state party.
The mandate of the Commission is to provide interpretation to Article 76 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
In that regard, the Commission considers for approval submissions of coastal states establishing sovereignty over their extended continental shelf, beyond the 200 Nautical Mile Exclusive Economic Zone.
