Some sections of industry have condemned Ghana’s open, non-discriminatory trade policy with China and say it must be reviewed.
Although China feeds the Ghanaian economy with a variety of goods and services, it appears the relationship is not all positive.
Many Ghanaian firms are reeling under severe financial pressure and have complained of dwindling levels of production citing unfair competition mainly from cheap imports from China.
Speaking on Joy FM’s business analysis program Business Trends, the Head of Bilateral Trade at the Trade Ministry Cletus Ayaaba said although government is aware of the China threat, there is very little that can be done.
He said the country’s dealings with multilateral organizations such the World Bank and the International Monitory Fund (IMF) prohibited the country from taking any decisions that may appear as protectionism.
But Managing Director of Aluworks, Kwasi Okoh who was also contributing to the discussion, challenged the claim.
“Listening to Mr Ayaaba…I wonder whether he is working for the Chinese or he is working for Ghana because we must look for Ghana first; it must be ourselves first and then we look at whether we can work with China to help us not to help China!”
He said industries were laying people off because they were not making good returns as a result of low prices of their products forced by Chinese imports.
