Ex-president Rawlings has drawn the battle lines for what will arguably be a fierce contest between his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and the sitting president John Atta Mills for the flagbearership role of the governing National Democratic Congress.His wife picked the nomination forms at the party’s national headquarters on Tuesday, amidst pomp from supporters who thronged the venue on motorbikes honking and chanting in support and show of solidarity with Mrs. Rawlings.NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and other party officers received the former first lady and handed her the forms.She told pressmen that her candidature marked the “beginning of taking Ghana back to where it belongs.”Joy News reporter Sammy Darko reported that the supporters of the ex-first lady who were in celebration mood followed her to her residence where she formally handed over her form to her husband, ex-President John Rawlings.Mr. Rawlings who has not hidden his displeasure at the Mills administration told a gathering of journalists, fanatics and well wishers that the battle ahead would be a herculean one.“The task ahead will not be an easy one. We will be fighting all kinds. If we are not fighting the opposition, you have the enemy also on one hand and you have the traitor also on the other,” he said, adding, “so we have to remain very vigilant.”He did not however mention who the enemy or traitor is, stating also that "as far as truth remains a weapon", his wife would stop at nothing to ensure that the NDC was brought to the path of truth.The NDC goes to congress in July to elect a flagbearer for the party ahead of the 2012 General elections.Even though the sitting president is yet to pick his form for re-election, he has not hidden his desire to contest the 2012 elections.He has until May 10 to pick nomination forms.
