The government has described as “strange” corruption allegations being leveled against officials of the Mills administration by ex-President John Rawlings.Deputy Information Minister Baba Jamal said the allegations are without basis.The ex-president during the official launch of the Konadu campaign for 2012 elections accused president Mills of presiding over a corrupt and failed government.According to him, the government deliberately delayed the organization of the party’s primaries knowing then that his wife would have won the election.He hinted that even if his wife loses the primaries in July, the NDC will undoubtedly lose the 2012 elections.But Speaking to Joy News’ Dzifah Bampoh on Wednesday, the Deputy Information Minister said as an apostle of probity and accountability, Mr Rawlings ought to know better.“The issue about [corrupt] board members and what not are all fabrications that I am surprised personally that the former president Rawlings will in his capacity as a former president who knows what goes into these things will be speaking like this.”“I find it deeply worrying that the founder who always talks about accountability and probity will go on air and make such statements when he knows very well he has no evidence to substantiate the allegations of corruption," he said.He also described as factually inaccurate Rawlings' suggestion that the party failed to organise early primaries fearing the President will lose miserably to Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.According to him, the NDC constitution stipulates that primaries can only be held at least 12 months into a general election if the party is in power but 24 months if the party is in opposition.He however applauded Nana Konadu’s decision to contest the position, positing that, that singular act marks the “evolution of the NDC as a party which is also developing with an opportunity to really confirm its status as a political party which is not hanging on one person’s neck.”Baba Jamal said the president will go into the July congress very “focused and well organized with clean hands; hands that can be trusted.”Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
