A falling tree branch has caused the death of a 16-year-old student of the Ghana Secondary School (Ghanass) in the Eastern regional capital Koforidua.

The first year General Arts student, Edmund Amoako was heading towards the boys dormitory from prep when the incident occurred on Sunday evening.

About six other students who were with him sustained varying degrees of injuries as a result of the incident which occurred after a downpour.

Headmaster of the School, Very Rev. Abraham Osei explained that majority of the students fled when they heard the sound of the breaking branch but Edmund could not escape.

He added that the deceased was pronounced dead at the St. Joseph's Hospital.

Those who sustained injuries have been treated and discharged.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service has ordered the felling of all trees that posed a danger on students in the school campound.

This move, the Service believes will avert the occurence of similar incidences in the future.

Public Relations Officer of the Service Emmanuel Asiedu Acheampong told Joy News in an interview that "having gone through this exeperience it now rests on us to find ways to prevent this from happening again."

"It is a difficult decision to take because the school is surrounded by trees but we will see which trees are old and need to be fell.".

Joy News' Kofi Siaw visited the school on Monday and reports that workers have began felling some of the trees as directed by the GES.
