The Upper West regional branch of the June fourth movement has criticized the Rawlingses for their attacks on President Mills.
They claim those attacks are targeted at the Vice President John Dramani Mahama who is seen as a potential leader after President Mills completes his term.
Members of the movement expressed these sentiments at a news conference in Wa.
Correspondent Rafik Salam reported that while eulogizing the contributions of former President Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu to the evolution of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), the group believes directing attacks meant for Vice-President Mahama at President Mills is unfair.
The group said just as the former first couple laid their lives for the party and country, others also made significant sacrifices and the Rawlingses must appreciate that.
Spokesperson for the regional June 4th Movement, Mr Geoffrey W. Tuu, said, “The potential of John Mahama as president of Ghana after the smooth [completion of Mills’ term] is that which is being attacked by the Rawlingses; president Mills is not the target because we are convinced that he will sweep the vote at the delegates congress against Mrs Rawlings.”
Mr Tuu reminded the Rawlingses that the NDC thrived on consensus when they were in power and that they must stop the divisive tendencies (Mrs Rawlings is vying for the flag-bearership of the NDC to lead the party into the 2012 elections).
The NDC, he contended, is not a dynasty.
