A security man at the British High Commission has been arrested by the police for making false insurance claims totaling GH Cedis 2,400(24 million cedis) on the Enterprise Life Assurance Company. The suspect, Samuel Kpabitey, 42, was alleged to have filed claims of persons who had died before he signed up for a Funeral Finance Policy Plan with the company. According to the Accra Regional Crime Officer, Boi-Bi-Boi, on July 1, 2005 the suspect took up a policy for his wife, his mother-in-law and his father-in-law with the company to mature in six months after which he was qualified to make a claim. He said the suspect after six months filed for claims for his father, his mother-in-law and his father-in-law claiming they all died within the policy period and was paid GH cedis (24 million cedis). The Crime Officer said after collecting the money, the suspect filed another claim, this time round for his mother and his wife, claiming that they had also died. He said the payment officer of the Enterprise Life Assurance Company became suspicious of the latest claim and decided to conduct his own investigations. The investigations revealed that all the claims made by the suspect were false, since the persons on account of whom he had collected the money had died before he took up the policy. A report was then made to the police and Kpabitey was arrested when he went to the bank to cash the cheque. Chief Superintendent Boi-Bi-Boi said the suspect was yesterday arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court charged with the offence and had been remanded to appear at a later date. Source: Daily Graphic
