A 29-year-old man, suspected to be the brain behind robberies around the Airport Residential Area in Accra has been arrested by the police.
The suspect, Yaw Dompreh, a scrap dealer, was captured on a CCTV camera while ransacking the house of one of his victims.
Speaking to the Ghanaian Times, Chief Inspector Nana Oppong of the Regional CID Operations, said on December 28, 2010 one Yuan Chao, a Tunisian national, reported that he had been robbed of his belongings at about 2:00am when he was asleep.
The suspect, he said, took away one BMT-61 laptop, one dell laptop, X box 360 game console, two laptop Jags, passport, yellow fever certificate, driving license, a hard drive and a wallet containing GH¢500.
He said because the complainant had a CCTV camera attached to his house, he was able to capture the image of the suspect.
Chief Inspector Oppong said Dompreh was spotted around the residential area by the Airport Police and he was arrested.
He said on interrogation, the suspect admitted the offence and said he had sold the items to his accomplices at Accra Newtown.
Chief Inspector Oppong said the suspect also admitted being behind two robberies that took place at the residence of one Mr. Mahmud Elahi Nia, an administrative officer of the Iranian Embassy, and Edwin Kofi Sarfo, an investor, at the Royal Park residential area at the Airport vicinity on December 13,2010.
He said the victims said the suspect scaled their walls and managed to sneak into their rooms to steal various items.
In the house of Mahmud, he took away a wrist watch valued at $700, a bracelet worth $200, a ring $100, 4 Nokia mobile phones costing $1,250, a laptop worth $1,200 and one memory disc valued at $500.
He said the suspect in a caution statement, also admitted being responsible for the second robbery.
