Minster of Communication Haruna Iddrisu has advised all telecommunication companies to respect the country's Gaming Act. "All telecom operators should respect Ghana’s Gaming Act, Act 721 of 2006 and that in undertaking your promotions, you should show utmost respect to the letter and spirit of that institution in order that we do not confuse your mandatory role of doing voice, video, data and now content,” the Minister said during the launch of MTN Business on Wednesday at the plush Alisa Hotel in Accra. The National Lotto Authority has in recent times taken on some telecom operators for what they consider are breaches to Ghana's Gaming Act. The NLA subsequently sued and won cases against some operators for the breach. In view of this, the Mr. Iddrisu who was a Guest of Honour at the event, in his address insisted that the operators must adhere to the rules and stay away from any infractions that can cause any crisis in the industry. He further encouraged the operators to "respect the approved guidelines of the Environmental Protection Agency. Even as we become weary of the biological effect of electromagnetic field, we are particularly concerned about its physical hazards or implications to the Ghanaian people.” As a self-acclaimed crusader for the localisation of business in Ghana, the Minister urged the new Chief Executive Officer of MTN, Michael Ikpoki not to hesitate in localizing the company's business operations “in order to create opportunities for Ghanaian entrepreneurs and businesses”. Mr. Iddrisu said he cannot wait to welcome MTN’s West African Cable System (WACS) which is intended to offer 5.12 terabites per second of bandwidth capacity. WACS is expected to land on the shores of Ghana on Friday May 13, 2011. This he said "will ensure a seamless interconnection and seamless transmission of information." He said government is excited that due to its commitment to the sector, the cost of E1 has seen a dramatic reduction. He therefore called on Ghanaian business to take advantage of the opportunity that the MTN Business will offer. Minister of Trade and Industry Hannah Tetteh who was also a Guest of Honour at the function said businesses must focus on how to contribute to the services sector which is now a major driver of the economy; a sector which contributes 51 percent to the country’s GDP. She said the services sector is the most dynamic sector of the economy and should catch the attention of businesses who want opportunities to grow.. She congratulated MTN for being the first to introduce such an innovative service to its clients in Ghana and pledged the governments support to ensure that the appropriate structures are put in place for Ghanaians to benefit fully.
