Following the invitation of the former Chief Executive of Kumasi Asante Kotoko Herbert Mensah to the outfit of the Bureau of National Investigations [BNI] some startling revelations seem to be emerging.
A former District Chief Executive of Garu-Tempane in the Kufuor administration Mr. Emmanuel Asigiri claimed some government ministers are members of the opposition New Patriotic Party.
Mentioned in his revelation are two deputy ministers of state in the ruling National Democratic Congress - Deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa belonging to the NPP of the Ayawaso West Wuguon constituency, whilst Deputy Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Omane Boamah being a member in the New Juaben constituency of the Eastern region.
The former DCE said a research he conducted at the NPP Headquarters on May 16 this year shows these two ministers of state are still members of the NPP and has since not renounced their membership.
Mr. Asigiri was reacting to a comment made by Akyena Brentuo on Asempa fm’s current affairs programme “Ekosii Sen” on Monday afternoon. Mr Brentuo had alleged that Mr. Herbert Mensah is tarnishing the image of the current government because he [Herbert] was an NPP member.
But the Deputy Information Minister who called into the programme ever denied being a member of the NPP. He says that assertion was a palpable lie since no one could rise to the position of President of the National Union of Ghana Students [NUGS] if he had been tainted by a political coloration.
“That statement is a palpable falsehood, I have never held a membership of the NPP neither have I been a member of the NPP. If you take a look at my political career, I was a student leader right from the first year when I was SRC Press secretary till I became NUGS President in my final year. I could not have been a member of any political party; the student’s constitutions of the SRC and NUGS are very clear, if you are a card bearing member of any political party, you cannot contest. There is no way I could have risen to that office after a vetting process if I were a member of any political party.
"After my national service at the parliament house of Ghana, I joined the Committee for Joint Action [CJA] and then became a card bearing member of the NDC in my days in the CJA. I have no card to return to the NPP. I can appreciate that they wished I were a member of the NPP and would be very excited to have me but unfortunately it is too late, I chose to belong to the National Democratic Congress where I cut my national political teeth.”
Meanwhile a former Constituency Chairman of the NPP in the Ayawaso West Wugoun Michael Omari-Wadie has confirmed Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa used to attend meetings in the constituency.
He says Mr. Ablakwa used to attend meetings where very important decisions were taken. “Ask Martin Agyei Mensah who was the Chairman at the time, ask him the role NPP played in getting him elected to the NUGS Presidency”.
Asked if he knew the party registration number of Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mr. Omari Wadie said he would make that available to Asempa FM at a later.
