The Nasara Youth Group of Chagli, Tamale, of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have issued an ultimatum to the three Members of Parliament (MPs) to join forces with president Mills to find the killers of the Ya-Na or risk losing their seat in the 2012 elections.
The group says Mr Iddrisu Haruna, MP for Tamale South, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, MP for Tamale Central and Alhaji Abubakari Sumani, all lawyers, promised during the last elections that they would bring their legal expertise to bear on the search for the killers of the late Overlord Dagbon, Ya-Na Yakubu Andani II.
However, almost two-and-a-half years after winning the election, the MPs have yet to fulfill their promise – a situation the group says has left it utterly disappointed.
In a statement signed and issued in Tamale Monday, the group said politicians must desist from politicising the murder of the Ya-Na, saying that had not helped find justice for the Ya-Na and 29 others who were killed in 2002.
The group also repeated their dissatisfaction with the president over his handling of the case.
Secretary of the group, Adamu Moktar, who jointly signed the statement with the Chairman, Yakubu Jamal, said they were particularly disappointed in the president’s statement that he would not hesitate to seek external help if he has to, in order to bring closure to the Ya-Na case.
“Are we actually safe as Ghanaians when we cannot deal with our security issues,” the group asked rhetorically.
Joy FM’s Northern Regional Correspondent, Mahama Sayibu who sighted the statement, quoted the group as cautioning president Mills to stop his false promises for “our dignity has been stripped.”
The Nasara group also repeated their mantra of having lost confidence in the ability of the president to find the killers of the Ya-Na and bring them to justice.
Government officials, according to the statement must stop castigating the Rawlingses, saying the massive support enjoyed by the NDC was unrelated to popularity of the former first couple.
Since declaring her intention to contest the flag-bearership of the NDC, former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and by extension her husband, have come under a barrage of criticism.
But Changli-based NDC group contends the criticisms are misplaced.
