The Executive of the Dormaa West constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have established a teak nursery at Dormaa-Ahenkro to provide seedlings for planting across the district.
The project, which took off in October 2006, has so far produced 190,000 seedlings. It was under the auspices of the Party's constituency chairman, Mr J.K. Mumuni Musah.
Inspecting the project, Mr Yaw Asiedu-Mensah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa West and Squadron Leader (Rtd) Ben Anane-Asamoah, District Chief Executive, commended the constituency chairman and his team for good works done and urged other party activists in the area to emulate them.
Mr Asiedu-Mensah noted that the Dormaa district had chosen teak because of the district's history of perennial bushfires, adding that teak had the capacity to grow in the fire-prone areas.
He said the district would study the situation and add other tree species to the project in future.
Mr Anane-Asamoah announced that it was government's policy for each of the country's 230 constituencies to establish a nursery project with at least 20,000 seedlings as part of measures to check desertification and promote the growth of economically viable trees.
He said seedlings, which were ready for transplant would be given out to farmers at no cost to be planted under strict supervision of the district forest services division.
Mr Anane-Asamoah added that beneficiaries were also expected to apply to the district assembly and have their plots inspected before gaining access to the seedlings.
The constituency chairman, Mr. Musah announced that more than 100 million cedis had so far been spent on the project.
He said over 80 per cent of the seedlings were ready for transplant and therefore urged prospective teak farmers in the district to come forward and utilize the opportunity.
