Companies in Tema have expressed grave concern over the frequent power cuts in the area amidst fears that the situation can undermine their operations in the long term.The situation seems to have taken a toll on the production rate and revenue levels of companies within the industrial enclave.Ghana Cement (Ghacem), the country’s largest cement manufacturer says it is unable to produce to meet its production level due to the inconsistent power supply.Speaking to Joy News, an official of Ghacem, Dr. Dawson-Amoah said the situation “is really frustrating” as it has brought production to a halt.He said the company’s two plants in Accra and Takoradi which produces about 2.4 million tons put together, use about 18 megawatts of power and that the inconsistent power supply has crippled their output.“This is really affecting us; that is, the inconsistency in the power supply is really affecting our production,” he lamented.He said production records show that the company has lost about 12, 400 tons of cement which should have been produced and revenue terms the company has lost about 2.3 million Ghana cedis.Dr. Dawson-Amoah revealed that production records indicate that the company has lost about 2.3 million Ghana cedis since the problem begun last Sunday.He however hinted that the alternative of using a generator to power its plants may not be realistic as it will be expensive to generate 18 megawatts for production on a daily basis.But Public Relations Officer of Tema ECG, Theresa Osabutey, says work is underway to ensure that power is restored to the communities.Story by Derick Romeo Adogla/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
