The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon has commended President Mills for contributing towards the peaceful resolution of the Ivorian crisis.
He is however counting on the Mills administration to help rebuild Ivory Coast after disputed polls killed thousands and threw their economy into disarray.
Ban Ki-moon made a brief stopover in Accra this morning en route to Ivory Coast to witness the investiture of President Alassane Ouattara. Mr Ban Ki-Moon is the first UN Secretary General to witness the investiture of any President, and he described today’s ceremony as historic.
President Mills, on his part, said his participation in today’s investiture is a demonstration of Ghana’s commitment towards rebuilding Ivory Coast.
He appealed to the international community and the development partners of Ivory Coast to offer the necessary assistance to quickly reverse the country’s economic fortunes.
He assured the Secretary General that his government will do well to contribute its quota to cleaning up the mess created after the political stalemate that left almost a thousand people dead.
President Mills has since led a government delegation to witness the investiture of Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan.
More than 20 heads of state are expected to witness the inauguration of President Alassane Ouattara. Representatives from across the political spectrum have also been invited, including members of ousted President Laurent Gbagbo's party.
