With less than one week for the management contract with Aqua Vitens Rand Limited to expire, Joy News is reliably informed that Ghana Water Company will take over the management of urban water supply in the country.
Aqua Viten’s contract expires on Monday June 6.
Civil Society organizations and workers of Ghana Water Company have described Aqua Viten’s performance as poor.
Last month government announced it would not renew the contract with the company.
The Minister of Works and Housing Alban Bagbin told Joy News government has set up a specialized company to take over the operations of AVRL from next week.
The minister said "a special purpose vehicle which we are calling Ghana Quality Water Limited will take over operations of the urban water system for some period."
He indicated that in the meantime, government will be meeting with stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the water management problem in the country.
Mr. Bagbin stated that in the past, individual managers did not sign performance contracts and that made it difficult for people to be held responsible for failures in the water management system.
He said “this time, we will make sure that performance contracts are signed and supervision will be tightened to make sure that the work is properly executed.”
