Coordinator for HIV/AIDS in the Western Region, Dr. Ronald Sowah has warned that upsurge in homosexual practice is likely to make health risks in the region increase.
Dr. Sowah earlier announced that 2,000 people have officially been registered as homosexuals in the region.
According to the Medical Practitioner, “with the influx of people streaming into the region such as refugees and expatriates, increased sexual activities could double the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS, Gonorrhea, Syphilis and other diseases like hypertension”.
He told Adom News, because the anus was not designed for sexual activity it does not contain lubricants that can facilitate the act of sex.
He said this breaks the skin lining in the anus area which leads to bleeding, making transmission of diseases easier.
“What makes it more dangerous is when the gay man is a bisexual; he infects his partner and carries it to his wife.” he emphasised.
Dr. Sowah reiterated that the medical implications of the act can easily affect the masses.
According to him, it becomes even more alarming when people do not report to health facilities for treatment when they are infected with STDs.
He advocated for careful plans to be made to control the act and the spread of diseases especially to change the orientation about homosexuality.
