President John Mills and the NDC will not lose anything if he is changed as flagbearer for the 2012 general elections, the campaign coordinator of ex-first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has said.
According to Berrick Namburr, President John Mills has an onerous responsibility to unite the party by declaring his unflinching support for the ex-first lady.
Only then will the NDC beat the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2012 elections, he said.
Speaking to Myjoyonline.com, the campaign director cited a litany of examples at Berekum in the Brong Ahafo region, Krowor and Odododiodio in the Greater Accra region and the Northern Region where he said J.H. Owusu Acheampong, Joshua Alabi, Nii Okaija Adamafio and B.A. Fuseini, respectively, all lost their constituencies to the New Patriotic Party candidates because they failed at one time or another to respect the need for change by the NDC party footsoldiers.
“NDC must be ready to learn lessons of change because changing is timing.”
“…President Mills will not lose anything if we change him as flagbearer. He is going to still be a president to finish 2012. Besides, the Better Ghana Agenda is not a Prof Mills agenda; it is an NDC agenda,” he pointed out.
He said nowhere in the party's constitution is it stated that a siting president is entitled to eight unchallenged years, stating unequivocally, that the non-performance of President Mills in the last two and half years has engendered massive disillusionment by party supporters.
He said unlike persons within the group Get Atta Mills Endorsed (GAME) who are preaching politics of exclusion, Nana Konadu will extend a long hand of invitation to President Mills when she wins the party’s primary in July.
Berrick Namburr would not however state categorically if the ex-first lady will join President Mills if she loses the primary, except to say that the continued intimidation being perpetrated by persons within the GAME fraternity will create a lot of disaffection and disunity for the party.
He mocked at the wave of public declaration and support for the president by some delegates across the country, asking, “If the ten regions have declared for Mills then why are they campaigning?”
Berrick Namburr said their campaign message is just as simple- “change the president” - and bring in a candidate who is firm, bold and resolute; a candidate who knows that when she wins elections, she first represents a party and must be seen to be performing by the footsoldiers of that party.
He said Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is that candidate and she is the one to rescue the party from imminent defeat at the hands of the NPP in 2012.
