The Accra Mayor has called the bluff of the Ga King Maker, Nii Tackie Amarkai III who ordered vehicle owners and members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to begin paying tolls to him.
Alfred Vanderpuije insists the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA)is the only legitimate institution to collect tolls from transport owners.
Nii Tackie Amarkai III at the outdooring of the newly installed Ga Chief made sweeping statements including the destoolment of some Ga chiefs he accused of being corrupt.
He did not understand why the GPRTU could collect tolls from transport owners at the various transport stations whilst he, the land owner, could not.
He therefore instructed his lieutenants to begin collecting the tolls on his behalf, insisting the GA state must begin to assert itself.
His directive was however met with stiff opposition first by the Chairman of the GPRTU, Alhaji Issah Tetteh.
Mr. Tetteh minced no words when asked if members of the GPRTU will consent to the new directive.
He told Joy FM Super Morning Show Host on Tuesday, his drivers will pay no pesewa to anybody purporting to be collecting tolls on behalf of the Ga Stool.
His stance has been vehemently supported by the AMA boss.
Vanderpuije told Joy News the Dzaasetse has no power to collect tolls from residents in Accra.
He argued it is only the AMA which has the statutory mandate to collect tolls for the development of the region and even that, it does so, in accordance with its bye-laws.
He advised all to follow due procedures in their dealings with people in the Accra Metropolitan Area.
