The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Yunyoo in the Northern Region has blamed what he said was former President John Mahama's "incompetence" for the party's defeat in the 2016 polls.

Joseph Naabu Bipoba said rather than appointing more experienced people into his government, the former President surrounded himself with young people who had little political experience.

He cited former Communications Minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah to stress the "inexperienced" people who were appointed into the previous government.

"Omane Boamah, what experience does he have in politics?" he said of the former Minister, adding he cannot win "even" a constituency election.

"But the President was listening to such people...that is why he lost so miserably, [and] so comfortably," he told Adom News’ Parliamentary Correspondent, Abednego Asante Asiedu Tuesday.

There are reports suggesting the former President is likely to contest the 2020 Presidential election after his humiliating defeat in the 2016 poll.

Out of the 273 of the 275 constituency results declared, the former President polled 4,701,162 representing 44.40 percent with the now President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recording 5,697,093 which was 53.80 percent of valid votes cast.

Former President Mahama's defeat in December last year confounded NDC functionaries and supporters who were confident of victory going into the election.

Explanations for the NDC's defeat have varied, resulting in the decision to set up a fact-finding committee headed by Professor Kwesi Botchwey to look into circumstances that led to the defeat.

Posters for a comeback for the former President have surfaced on social media reigniting discussions on the NDC's electoral performance.

But Mr Naabu Bipoba said Mr Mahama will "mess up more" if he listens to those calling on him to contest the flagbearship of the NDC.

"He will lose miserably," he said, adding those calling for the President's comeback are persons he made Ministers and Chief Executive Officers of state institutions.

He said he will not support Mr Mahama because he lacks competence and self-control. "He should give peace a chance for the NDC."
