The Zeera Group, the company implementing the National Youth Employment Programme’s Youth in Road Maintenance module on Saturday took delivery of 21 new trucks to augment its fleet of vehicles for its operations. The trucks, procured by the company, are to be distributed among the company’s operating teams where the Youth in Road Maintenance module is operational. The module is currently operational in five regions - Central, Volta, Ashanti, Northern and Eastern – and is expected to be rolled out nationwide. Officials have told Myjoyonline.com the 21 five-tonne JAC trucks only form part of a larger consignment being procured to be deployed for the project.“We took delivery of an earlier consignment and Saturday’s batch from CAITEC Delta Company is to augment the existing fleet, and as we spread to the other regions, we will procure more for the operations”, an official told Myjoyonline.com.The Youth in Road Maintenance was launched by the NYEP in Accra in September of 2010, to undertake general road maintenance works. Specific tasks include pothole patching, clearing of bushes and trees on road shoulders to enhance visibility, removal of sand off road surfaces to maintain road quality and the desilting of drains. The module currently engages nearly 5,000 youths, and operators plan to engage about double the number by the close of the year to help maintain roads in the country and to eventually help reduce road accidents resulting from poor road conditions.Story by Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
