Some rice farmers under the Ghana Rice Inter-Professional body are proposing the establishment of a rice development fund to support the industry.According to them government has over the years not been able to adequately address the problems of rice farmers due to other equally pressing demands.Speaking in an interview with Joy Business during a workshop to train some rice farmers on advocacy to push for the proposal, President of the Association, John Awuni appealed to government to show the lead by setting aside some resources to support the fund.“We want to ask the government...to set aside a certain revenue for the development of the rice sector,” Mr Awuni said stressing this will ensure better production in the years ahead. Some rice farmers Joy Business spoke to have welcomed the establishment of the fund. They however believe issues such as access to credit and technical know-how are impeding their development. The Ghana Rice Inter-Professional Body was set up ostensibly to regulate activities in the rice sector with the aim of increasing rice production as well as reducing the over reliance on imported rice.Source: Joy Business/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
