Several hundreds of children below the age of 18 live in juvenile remand homes and correctional facilities across the country. The kids have been convicted of offences ranging from petty theft to defilement. The Juvenile Justice Act provides a legal framework to protect the rights of children, but there is concern that despite the provisions in the law, many children are unfairly convicted and sent to these remand homes. The managers say some of the juvenile offenders are given sentences which are too harsh.Another area of concern is the conditions under which these children are held – Ghana has only four remand homes and correctional facilities and there has been very little investment in these structures which were built decades ago.Joy FM's Fiifi Koomson has been investigating the juvenile justice system for our documentary programme, HOTLINE.Take a listen.
