What was supposed to be a quiet walk about in Accra, turned into a somewhat carnival, when the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo took his listening campaign to the Odododiodio constituency. Walking through the principal streets of Accra, Nana Addo’s presence instantly attracted scores of people, which built up into a massive crowd in no time. Market women and traders were not left out as they abandoned their wares and goods to join what could be described as the biggest gathering of people in Accra in recent times. Many of the traders said they did not care if they made any sales on the day or not because the mere sight of Nana Addo, coupled with a handshake with him has satisfied them. Amidst singing and dancing, they expressed disappointment in President Mills’ NDC government, vowing to show them the exit in 2012. At the old slaughter house in British Accra, Nana Addo went round to interact with the butchers and to see and hear for himself what their concerns and problems are. They lamented how government has turned a deaf ear to their pleas for a modern slaughter house to be built for them since the current one was gradually outliving its usefulness as a result of the pressure on it. Through Jamestown to the beach, Nana Addo was greeted with complains of hardship, rising cost of living, failed promises by the NDC, high cost of fishing equipment, light fishing, amongst others. At Adedenkpo, trunk manufactures told Nana Addo that the NDC government has refused to help them with loan facilities to inject into their businesses and this they say is gradually grinding their business to a halt. They promised to vote massively for Nana Addo in 2012 because they are confident the NPP can help make life better for them. “Life was better when the NPP was in power for eight years and we know it will get better again with Nana Addo as president” they said. The scene at the Zongo lane was captivating as members of the Zongo community, young and old, rushed to catch a glimpse of Nana Addo and shake hands with him, assuring him that “this time we will go with you. We are fed up with the lies, propaganda and failed promises of the NDC and we have decided to vote them out of power next year.” They cited high cost of living, lack of jobs and inability to pay their children’s school fees as some of the reasons why they have decided to show the NDC the exit come 2012. The Kantamanto and Makola markets were the pick of the bunch when Nana Addo finally arrived there. Commercial activities came to a halt, the moment the news of Nana Addo’s presence broke. He was given a thunderous welcome that shook the grounds of the market to its very foundation. Nana Addo thanked them for the show of love and support, assuring them that better times are coming to Ghana again, and soon, God willing under his leadership.
