It was a sad spectacle at the Tema Fishing Harbour Monday morning when the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, took his listening campaign there to begin his tour of the Tema East constituency.
Nana Addo, who spent a lot of time touring the entire fishing harbour and listening to their concerns was obviously not happy about the current state of affairs there, charging that the appropriate steps needed to be taken immediately to curtail the problems confronting the fishing community.
He toured the beach, the boat yard, the cold stores and the fish markets in the harbour, and was told about the myriad of problems that the fishing communities currently face and how all those problems combine to make life difficult for them.
The fishermen, who sounded extremely frustrated, took turns to speak strongly about the problems and concerns that they have, all of them condemning strongly the Mills administration for neglecting them and refusing to pay attention to their plights.
They complained about the cost of outboard motors which they say has shot up drastically since the assumption of office by the NDC.
Tettey, a fisherman, said, “The NDC government under the leadership of President Mills has been very insensitive to the fishing community because the prices of the equipment that we work with have all gone up astronomically. What is even frustrating is that when you are able to get a catch in spite of all difficulties, the sale of the fish too becomes a problem because people can’t buy.”
They complained also about frequent shortage of pre-mix fuel and how it is hampering their work, assuring Nana Addo that they will vote massively for him to ensure that he wins the 2012 elections “so that you can come and save us because the NDC government is killing us slowly.”
