GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturers of anti-malaria drug Halfan™, have denied asking the Food and Drugs Board not to publicise the faking of the company's medicine in 2002.Former FDB boss Mr Emmanuel Agyarko in a documentary on Joy Fm cited the company for attempting to get him to be mute over the issue. But GSK in a statement said it rather cooperated with the board then to flush out the fake product, which was being distributed by some unscrupulous persons, from the market. Here is the full text of the statement:Patient health and safety is of the utmost importance to GlaxoSmithKline; GSK aims to protect patients worldwide from counterfeits of its products and in each case takes appropriate steps to safeguard public health, working in partnership with healthcare institutions and local authorities. GSK investigates and, where appropriate, takes legal action against the manufacturers, distributors, retailers and other parties involved in counterfeiting our products. We take allegations of unethical behaviour concerning counterfeit products very seriously and wish to clarify that GSK refutes any allegations that we sought to conceal the investigation of counterfeiting of Halfan™. GSK will always support and work with authorities to ensure the appropriate reviews take place on any counterfeit products.GSK recognises that the pharmaceutical industry has an important role to play in helping to minimise the counterfeiting of our products and is committed to a comprehensive programme of action against counterfeiting.
