The Independent newspaper says an uneasy calm hangs in the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters of Burma Camp following the discovery of the dead body of Staff Sgt. Peter Kyere, one of the three bodyguards of current Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General J. B. Danquah. The paper said its enquiries revealed that the deceased was one of the CDS’s three bodyguards, and whilst an investigation has been instituted into the matter, concerns were being raised at the Camp as to how a bodyguard of the most senior officer in the Ghana Armed Forces could die under such mysterious circumstances. ‘The concerns come in the wake of recent unexplained killings in Accra and Tema, which killings have been dubbed "contract killings," according to the paper. The deceased’s body was found last Monday afternoon in the bushes near the Recce Regiment pantry in the Camp. The last time he was seen alive was with close friends of his on the preceding Sunday around 4 P.M. According to the paper, the dead body was located by some soldiers who work in the cook house, after the persistent ringing of the deceased’s mobile phone attracted them to the scene. Apparently, a lot of his friends and colleagues who had not seen him throughout Sunday night and Monday morning had been ringing constantly trying to reach him with queries on his absence from places he was supposed to have been. According to the paper, its sources in the Camp said there was no sign of struggle at the setting in which the dead body was discovered, and there was no drop of blood too anywhere in sight, and that had raised to the fore questions on the possibility that the deceased was murdered somewhere else and his body dumped where it was found in the bush near the Recce cook house. An eye-witness account said, the late Staff Sgt. Kyere's body was found with a deep cut at the back of his neck close to the nape. And while a gun and an empty shell were found lying close to the body, other evidence on the spot pointed to a mode of death other than suicide. The eye witness said, the deceased's hand was firmly stuck on his chest, and the wound looked like something made with a cutlass. Some close friends of his, who spoke to the paper, noted that the late Staff Sergeant, who is survived by a wife and two kids, was a friendly and forthright person, and had enough strength of character that will not push him to commit suicide. The Independent said the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service have been called in, and are already conducting investigation into the matter. The paper said it also picked up hints that two soldiers who were last seen with Staff Sgt. Kyere on Sunday had been picked for questioning.
