Four out of seven suspected highway robbers who blocked a section of the Agona Nkwanta-Half Assini Highway at Apimenim, attacked and robbed passengers of five vehicles of their valuables at gunpoint in the early hours of Tuesday have been arrested.Those arrested included two Fulani herdsmen and two others who claimed to be Ghanaians.Their names were given as Adamu Wadrago, 21, Mohammed Gundzi, 30, both Fulani herdsmen, Salifu Musah, 23, a farmer and Ibrahim Issah 20, a cattle dealer from Bawku and Walewale, respectively.They were said to have collected the mobile phones, money, wristwatches and necklaces from the passengers and subjected those who did not have anything to offer to serious beatings.The robbers, who were believed to have travelled from Kumasi to the Western Region, blocked the highway with broken tree branches, forcing the drivers to stop.Upon the arrest of the suspects, some of the victims who made it to the Police Headquarters in Sekondi identified the four as members of the group that attacked and robbed them. They also identified their mobile phones and collected it from the suspects.According to the Western Regional Police Commander, Mr Kofi Duku Arthur, at about 2.00 a.m. on Tuesday, the police had information that some masked armed robbers had blocked a section of the Agona Nkwanta-Half Assini Highway at Apimenim and were beating and collecting valuables from passengers.He said a police patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene but before it got to the spot, the perpetrators had ended their operations and vanished from the scene.The regional commander said the police embarked on snap checks and at about 5.00 a.m. on Tuesday, a Hyundai mini bus, with registration number GE 9135 X, pulled up at the Apremdo Barrier.According to the commander, the passengers were directed to get down to be searched. Four of the occupants of the vehicle quickly got down and took to their heels. They were given a hot chase but only one of them, Salifu Musah, was arrested. The oth¬ers managed to escape with the weapons used in the robbery.He said the police later managed to apprehend Ibrahim Issah, Adamu Wadrago and Mohammed Gundzi and when a search was conducted on them, four mobile phones, three wrist watches, one gold bracelet, one gold necklace and money totaling GH¢623 (¢6,023,000) were found on them.The suspects are being processed for court to be remanded into proper custody for further investigations.Source: Daily Graphic
