Eight people have been arrested by the High way Patrol Unit (HPU) of the Police Service, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 329 full pieces of imitated wax prints into the country from Togo.
The suspects, in¬cluding seven women and a male were ar¬rested on different oc¬casions on the Tema¬ Aflao and Accra-Ho highways.
They are Evelyn Afi Glover, Gloria Atikpo, Joyce Ayivor, Mevehmo Happy, Evelyn Mawuli, Esinam Atsu, Akpene Kofitsey and Jerry Somi .
Superintendent Sayibu Gariba, Commander of the HPU, said that on July 30, police personnel on duty on the Tema Aflao highway, intercepted an Accra bound passenger bus at Dawa, near Ada.
He said a search conducted on the vehicle revealed three mini travelling bags and 12 boxes full of uncustomed wax prints totaling 264 pieces.
Five women among the passengers claimed ownership of the goods and were arrested.
Suppritendent Gariba said that on august 2, police intercepted two other vehicles on the Accra- Tema highway and on Accra-Ho highway.
He said 20 wax prints were found on the Aflao-Accra bound bus, while 45 were discovered on the Accra-Ho bus at Asikuma.
Esinam Atsu, Akpene Kofitse and Jerry Somi were arrested in the two in¬stances.
He decried the activities of individuals and group of persons who smuggle uncustomed wax prints into the country saying that the police are up to the task and will arrest anybody or group of persons who attempt to smuggle wax prints into the country.
He said the modus operandi of the smugglers is that they sometimes conceal the cloth in sacks of charcoal, traveling bags, sacks of maize and cassava among others all in an effort to outwit the security agencies.
Such activities, he said, cripple the revenues that the government seeks to realise.
