President John Agyekum Kufuor has dared critics of his government, especially opposition political parties threatening the unknown should the energy crisis facing the country persist after September ending, to do their worst. “What can they do to us? What can they do to us? They can’t do us anything,” the president said in his native Twi language while addressing a New Patriotic Party's 2008 elections campaign launch in Tema on Sunday to climax the party's 15th anniversary celebration. The NPP turned 15 1ast Saturday. The party says the rally was in honour of its footsoldiers who had consistently complained of neglect from the leadership and government. President Kufuor explained that his government had had some difficulties with energy generation and supply as a result of problems associated with the Akosombo hydro-power generation dam, leading to huge costs in investments in thermal plants to address the nearly one-year-old crisis. The government has in the course of addressing the energy crisis, given and rescheduled deadlines it set itself to restore the nation to regular supply. But President Kufuor said his critics have lunged unto the latest of such deadlines, September ending, and threatening ‘we shall see what happens if the government fails to meet the deadline.’ It is the alleged threat that seems to irk the President so much so, he has dared the critics, who NPP General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow has identified as being led by the NDC, to do whatever they can.
