The Cocoa Day celebration at Effiduase in Ashanti Region was nearly marred by the tragic death of an ll-year-old girl who was run over by a truck in a float distributing cocoa products.
Mavis Boateng also known as Maame was pronounced dead on arrival at the Effiduase Hospital.
Mavis, a class four pupil of the Ahmadiyya Primary School at Asokore, was reportedly pushed under the float vehicle from which staff of the COCOBOD was throwing out sachets of Milo as part of activities marking the day.
According to eye witnesses, a lot of people were following the truck which was led by a brass band to create awareness of the cocoa day.
The girl's father, Thomas Asante Ansah, told the Times that the incident happened at about 7:00.a.m.
“Mavis was washing at the road side when the float was passing. One of the sachets fell close to her and in an attempt to collect it fell under the truck from a push by someone who picked the product,” Mr Ansah recalled.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyemang-Mensah, expressed regret about the incident and pledged government support for the bereaved family.
