The Nadowli District Chief Executive (DCE), Wing Commander (Rtd), Eric Dakurah, has appealed to students not to engage in fruitless confrontations that go a long way to retard the progress of their education and areas. Rather, he urged them to collaborate effectively with their Chiefs and District Assemblies to come out with projects that would propel their areas to attract workers from all over the country. Commander Dakurah said this during the annual durbar of the Nadowli District Students’ Union at Nadowli. He said students could be useful in revenue mobilization, adult education, supporting farmers and assisting in carrying out government policies to the people in the District. He denounced strikes, demonstrations and the vandalising of school properties, which he said were drawing a lot of areas backwards in the country. The DCE urged them to eschew negative practices such as drunkenness, womanising and prostitution and the use of hard drugs since such practices could ruin their future and defeat the government’s vision of developing a quality human resource base. The DCE said the government had committed so much resources into the realization of the capitation grant, school feeding programme, support to students among others and urged the students to reciprocate by staying home to work for the country, instead of running out for greener pasture elsewhere. "It is disheartening to see students who have been trained running away from where their services are really needed", he said. Naa Dr. Francis Banka, Divisional Chief of the Sombo traditional area who spoke on "The role of Chieftaincy institution in the development of Districts" said although the "traditional roles of chiefs were eroded by democracy"; chiefs were still instrumental in mobilizing resources for the development of their areas. "Although our developmental roles have not been clearly defined, most chiefs have taken it upon themselves to initiate projects that would enhance the development of their areas as novelties". Naa Dr. Banka commended students in the Nadowli District for taking up the responsibility of teaching in basic and senior secondary schools during vacation. Mr. Elijah Bisung, President of the Union said they donated books and other useful items amounting to about GH¢500 to Daffiama Senior secondary school, Queen of Peace Secondary School and Kaleo Secondary/Technical School. The Nadowli District Assembly presented a clock each to all the 35 students who volunteered to teach their younger ones in the Junior and Senior secondary schools. GNA
