The Vector Control Unit of the Sunyani office of the Zoomlion Company Limited, in collaboration with Labiofam, a group of vector control specialists from Cuba, has embarked on a massive mosquito control activity in the Brong Ahafo Region, with the view to suppressing mosquito vector population in the various communities.The programme is basically intended to drastically reduce malaria which has been the number one cause of deaths in the region.The exercise is targeted at various places which have been mapped out and tagged as breeding sites of mosquitoes such as ponds, rivers, choked gutters and waterlogged areas as well as artificial tanks.A 450-member spraying group has been deployed to the various municipal and districts in the region to apply larvicides known as bactivec and griselef, biological products which are target specific.The Brong Ahafo Regional Vector Control Officer of Zoomlion, Mr Ernest Brenyah, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic in Sunyani, said the application of insecticides, called adulticiding, was also occasionally applied in the various communities.Mr Brenyah advised residents in the various neighbourhoods to be conscious of their environment and dispose of empty cans, tins and old tyres properly and also ensure that their surroundings were kept dry at all times.He also urged the community members to constantly weed, sweep, trim their flowers and clear choked drains; as such places were perfect breeding places for mosquitoes.Mr Brenyah expressed optimism that if the people were to strictly observe environmental cleanliness and embark on regular sanitation programmes, malaria attacks as well as water and air-borne diseases could be brought to the barest minimum, if not completely eradicated.The Regional Zoomlion Vector Control Officer used the opportunity to express his gratitude to the regional environmental team, led by Mr Sylvester Ankamah, for their immense support for the programme.He also appealed to assembly members to get actively involved in the fight against malaria by periodically organising sensitisation and clean-up campaigns in order to protect their electorates against being attacked by diseases.
