Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba has warned Ghana that history will repeat itself if two sides meet in the final of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The two countries are the favourites for January’s tournament to be held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
This comes after title holders Egypt, giants Nigeria and Cameroon all failed to qualify.
The draw of the 2012 Nations Cup will be held on Saturday but Drogba is already eyeing a draw that can send both Ghana and Ivory Coast to the final.
Ivory Coast beat Ghana on penalties in the final of 1992 tournament and with next year’s competition the 20th anniversary of that game, the Chelsea attacker is confident history will repeat itself if the two sides meet in the final game.
While recording a commercial in France last night, Drogba was asked if he would like a repeat of the Ivory Coast–Ghana final he said: “Yes of course!
“I have been dreaming about this situation (Ivory Coast-Ghana final) since the full line-up of teams for the Africa Cup of Nations was known.
“If this happens I know history will repeat it self!”
The last time the two sides met Ivory Coast triumphed over Ghana and that was at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.
On that occasion the Elephants beat the Black Stars 3-1 in Group B of the tournament.
