Frequent breakdown and maintenance of obsolete medical equipment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is draining the facility financially and affecting quality health delivery.
Acting Head of Emergency Medicine Directorate, Dr. Kwaku Nyame, says equipment and other installations are yet to see any replacement, ten years after the unit was opened in 2008.
Experts recommend a four-year cycle replacement schedule to ensure high performance.
But Dr. Nyame says the hospital is financially handicapped to procure new equipment to support modern methods of health care.
“They break down often, you may not get them when needed. As you use it for long period they become less effective”, he said.
Meanwhile, medical equipment dealers, Mangel Klicks, wants the government to partner private sector to address such challenges in the health sector.
Managing Director, Dr. Charles Kwamena Ackon says there are a lot of companies who have the capacity and want partners in the field to do what have this done as they do in Europe.
He made the comments when Angel Foundation, a subsidiary of the Angel Group of Companies donated 30 thousand US Dollars worth of assorted medical equipment to the hospital.
