Two non-governmental organisations; Action Aid and Centre for Sustainable Development, have constructed a shed and provided benches costing 15 million cedis (GHc1500) for the Brong Ahafo Regional branch of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit. Making the presentation in Sunyani, Mr. Isaac Oware-Aboagye, Programmes Manager for Action Aid said the gesture was to ensure the comfort of victims, mostly women, who went to the unit with their problems. He noted that most men were shirking their responsibilities, resulting in violence at home, leaving women no choice but to run to the office for assistance. Mr. Oware-Aboagye expressed regret that domestic violence was on the increase in the region and called for their early resolution "since women suffer the most when it comes to violence at home. If they become free, society will also be free". He said Action Aid operated mainly in the Asutifi and Tain districts in the region, focusing on HIV sensitisation, empowering women in leadership and decision-making positions and food rights. "Food right is a programme to ensure that people have access to food, that farmers are provided with the right inputs and have market accessibility, among others", the Programmes Manager said. The Brong Ahafo Regional Commander of Police, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kweku Ayesu Opare-Addo, thanked the two NGOs for the gesture, saying it was in the right direction "to help soothe the pain of victims". Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Kweku Amoako, in-charge of the Unit, expressed appreciation to the two NGOs and appealed to other organisations for assistance.Meanwhile, the police have arrested a 25-year-old painter at Yeji, Samadu Alhassan, who allegedly inserted a concoction into the private part of an 18 year-old student of Yeji Secondary School to commit illegal abortion resulting in the girl's blindness. ASP Kweku Amoako told newsmen that when the accused realised that the student who was his girlfriend was pregnant, he inserted the concoction to terminate the pregnancy. After the insertion the victim began having burning sensation in her eyes and was rushed to the St.Mathias Hospital in Yeji but was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital where it was confirmed that she had become blind as a result of the concoction. He said the accused on hearing of this bolted but was arrested at Atebubu upon a tip-off and placed in custody to be processed for court.Source: GNA
