The Upper West Region has recorded 11 deaths and 40 injuries from 30 road accidents during the first half of the year.Nine people died and 20 had injuries from 24 road accidents during the same period last year, Mr George Hikah Benson, Upper West Regional Minster has announced.He was addressing the opening session of the sixth regional delegates conference of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at Wa.
All executive officers were retained for another four-year tenure of office.They were, Mr Mahamudu Iddrisu, Chairman, Chief Abudu Bukari, Vice-Chairman, Mr Nuhu Mankama, First Trustee and Alhaji Abdul-Aziz Adams, Second Trustee.Mr Benson asked executives of the union, to strive for high standards among its members for passengers to feel comfortable and safe on the road.He noted that the state of their vehicles, standard of driving and treatment meted out to passengers would determine whether tourists would return to the country.Mr Benson appealed to road users to be disciplined and adhere to rule and regulations with regard to the use of the road and avoid the use of unregistered motorbikes and riding without crash helmets.Nana Yaw Manu, National Chairman of GPRTU said it had taken delivery of some commercial vehicles on hire purchase to members.Mr Stephen Okudjeto, General Secretary of the union called on the regional unions to acquire at least one of the buses to generate revenue to support their activities instead of relying on membership dues.Source: GNA
