The Nanumba North District in the Northern Region placed 8th in the National League Table of District Performance in the 2011 BECE out of 163 districts in the country.
The Deputy Minister of Education, Mahama Ayariga who is on a tour of the three northern regions hailed them at a durbar of stakeholders in education in Bimbilla the district capital.
He encouraged all districts in the Northern Region to emulate the sterling example of Nanumba North who in spite of having the same challenges as the rest of the region have been able to perform well nationally.
Mahama Ayariga said their performance indicated that every District in the Northern Region could also make it.
The Deputy Minister is leading a taskforce to the three regions to discuss factors that contribute to the poor performance of the pupils at the BECE because government is committed to reversing the negative and dangerous trend.
He said that government will do whatever it takes to let failures of the BECE become a thing of the past because the future of the Nation depends on the Education children receive today.
The Deputy Minister made these remarks when stakeholders from Nanumba North and South districts, Gonja East District and Kpandai District all converged in Bimbilla to meet him on Friday to discuss the poor BECE results and Government’s efforts to stem this negative trend.
District Chief Executives and Directors of Education and teachers and pupils all committed themselves to take all the steps needed to reverse the situation. Stakeholders at the meeting identified specific local challenges that work against the performance of the pupils at the BECE and agreed on strategies to combat the negative trend. The Education Oversight Committees of the various districts accepted the challenge to bring their districts up in the BECE results from next year onwards.
