Testing of vehicles and issuance of roadworthy certificates by private garages is expected to begin in the Ashanti Region next year. The regional office of the Driver and Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA) says it has initiated processes to register designated garages for a smooth take-off in February 2012.The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport is currently piloted in Accra.Ashanti Regional Manager of the DVLA, Tetteh Martey, told Nhyira News a committee of stakeholders in the transport industry has completed and submitted it feasibility report on the project. He said the authority will assume a supervisory role to ensure the licensed garages operate within their mandate.Mr. Martey believes the initiative will help fight illegal activities like issuance of fake documents.Meanwhile, the DVLA regional office is reaching out to charity with a donation of food and sanitary items worth over six thousand cedis to the Kumasi Children’s Home.Mr. Martey says the gesture is a demonstration of the office’s care for the under-privileged.
