Alhaji Amadu Lamusah, Northern Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has appealed to the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to open more lorry parks in the metropolis to decongest the existing ones.
He said congestion at the lorry parks had made parking and driving out inconvenient for both drivers and passengers and had also made the enforcement of discipline a problem.
Alhaji Lamusah was addressing the Regional Council Meeting of the GPRTU, which also coincided with the election of new executives of the union in Tamale on Monday.
Alhaji Amadu Lamusah, Regional Chairman, Chief Zakaria Wemeh, Vice chairman, Mr. Tanko Bawa, First Trustee and Alhaji Abubakari Issahaku, Second Trustee, were all returned unopposed.
He said the union had intensified education of its drivers on road safety measures and appealed to the authorities to consider retraining drivers, most of whom are illiterates, and learnt driving as driver mates.
He also appealed to the authorities to translate the Ghana Highway Code into the local languages to enable the illiterate drivers read and understand road signs and regulations.
Mr. Yaw Manu, National Chairman of the GPRTU said the union had negotiated for buses and cars for its members.
He said members would be required to pay a deposit of 25 to 17 million cedis for the buses and cars respectively after which the rest of the payment would be spread over a five-year period.
