US-based Ghanaian film maker, Leila Djansi on Sunday nearly swept clean, most of the categories in which she was nominated at the second edition of the Ghana Movie Awards. Leila’s latest flick “Ties that Bind” which is scheduled to premiere at the end of the year worked magic for her as she bagged 8 awards including the coveted “Best Picture” award. She also picked up gongs for “Best Directing (English Languge)”, “Best Art Direction” and “Best Movie Africa Collaboration” for her cross-country all-star cast in the movie “Ties that Bind”. The movie was also recognised for “Best Editing” and “Best Sound Editing and Mixing”. Nollywood and Hollywood screen giants, Omotola Jalade and Kimberly Elise who were lead actors in “Ties that Bind” walked home with the “Best Actress Africa Collaboration” and “Best Actress in a Leading Role [English Language]” awards respectively. Coming close on Leila’s heels was, Shirley Frimpong- Manso whose movie serial, “Adams Apples”, won five awards including “Best Writing Adapted or Original Screen Play”. Nollywood veteran actor, Olu Jacobs was honoured with the “Life Time Achievement Award” for his contribution to the growth of the sub-region’s movie industry. In the main award categories, 2010’s Best Actor, Madji Michel once again grabbed the “Best Actor in a Leading Role” (English Language) on the ticket of the 2011 movie “Somewhere In Africa”. “Best Actor in a Leading Role” (Local Language) was for the second time nabbed by Kofi Adu popularly known as Agya Koo. The “Best Actress in a Leading Role” (English) went to Hollywood’s Kimberly Elise for “Ties that Bind” while that for the Local Language category went to Vivian Jill for “Yaw Donkor”. Majid Michel was twice lucky on the night as he grabbed a second gong for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role (English Language)” whereas “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” (Local language) went to Joseph Osei. “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” (English language) was bagged by Nadia Buari, while the “Best Actress in a Supporting role” [Local Language] went to Rose Mensah popularly known as Kyeiwaa. The “Discovery of the Year” award went to Kwaku Manu who starred in the movie "So, So and So." Nollywood stars, Ramsey Nouah and Omotola Jalade, picked up awards for “Best Actor Africa Collaboration”” and “Best Actress Africa Collaboration” respectively. Kofi Adjorlolo picked up the “Best Cameo Actor” award for his role in the movie “Somewhere in Africa” whiles veteran Grace Nortey took that for “Best Cameo Actress” for her role in “Adams Apples”. The public voting categories saw Martha Ankomah emerge “Favourite Actress” with Prince David Osei taking the “Favourite Actor” award. “Best Actor” in a TV series went to "Funny Face" for his role in "Chorkor Trotro" whereas "Auntie B" of Efiewura fame took home the “Best Actress in a TV Series” award. The award for “Best TV series” went to Chorkor Trotro. Other categories that were awarded on the night included “Best Directing” (Local Language) which went to Augustine Abbey (Idikoko) for his movie Agya Koo Gbengbentus. Best Music (Original Song) went to Mframa for the movie "Agya Koo Gbengbentus" with Best Music (Original Score) going to Adams Apples. Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s Adams Apples was also adjudged the “Best Story” whereas Leila Djansi’s Ties that Bind took away the “Best Editing” award. Ties that Bind and Adams Apples were respectively awarded “Best Cinematography” and “Best Make-up”. The Silverline Films movie Queen’s Pride bagged the “Best Costume” award whiles Pascal Amanfo’s horror movie Grave Yard was adjudged the movie with the “Best Visual Effects”.
