Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba has suggested the Africa Cup of Nations tournament should be organised every three or four years to make it more sought after. The former Nigeria international adds his voice to many who are making various suggestions to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) about how to make the tournament better.
Speaking to Joy Sports in Accra, Ikpeba said
''I think organising it every two years sometimes wears out most of our big players who play big clubs in the world. If it’s being done every three or four years makes it special''.
The former Super Eagles forward who won the tournament in 1994 believes the tournament has grown to a stage where it is generating a lot of interest worldwide thus the need to space out the frequency with which it is organised such that it can be sought after like the World Cup.
"The fact that it is being organised in an odd year is also a good idea because it does not clash with the World Cup" he said.
Meanwhile CAF has decided to organise the tournament in odd years – the reason why another tournament will be played next year in South Africa.
Victor Ikpeba was named African Footballer of the year in 1997 and will be one of the expert analysts for Super Sport DSTV’s coverage of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon which kicks off on January 21 2012.
