A deputy Information Minister, James Agyenim Boateng has said the eight years of the opposition New Patriotic Party's (NPP) abysmal performance in government cannot be compared to the superb performance of the Mills-led administration in three years. Touting the credentials of the Mills-led government, he said prudent economic policies by President J.E.A Mills has made Ghana the fastest growing economy in the world, coupled with single digit inflation, massive development in the Agric, Education, Health and other sectors of the economy. But the NPP disagrees. The party has described the Mills-led government as ineffectual and therefore must be shown the exit. They argue that the NDC government which inherited a better economy from the erstwhile Kufuor administration has managed to increase the country’s public debt by about 40 per cent, with corresponding high interest rates, increased taxes and the free fall of the cedi. The NPP believes they are the only alternative to save Ghanaians from the hardships the NDC has plunged the nation into, given the track record of the eight-year rule of J.A. Kufuor. However, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, James Agyenim Boateng said no one can begrudged the NPP, since their actions attest to the fact that they are very desperate for power. He noted that the NPP is making the noise because they don’t have any message for the electorate and have resorted to unnecessary criticisms of government. James Agyenim Boateng who had a copy of the NPP 2000 manifesto dubbed Agenda for Positive Change enumerated the numerous promises the NPP made to Ghanaians that never saw the light of day, which according to him, “exposes the great deception of the NPP”. Agyenim Boateng added that the social intervention programmes being trumpeted by the NPP were either introduced between the latter part of the first term or in the second term of the Kufuor administration. He cited the School Feeding Programme, National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP), National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Livelihood Empowerment against Poverty Programme (LEAP), Metro Mass Transport, Capitation Grant and others as programmes introduced by the erstwhile Kufuor government as evidence. The deputy Information Minister therefore found it very strange that the NPP is using their eight years in power as a yardstick to measure the performance of the NDC. Agyenim Boateng mentioned the distribution of free exercise books, school uniforms, free laptops, free Mathematics and Science scholarship for over 40 thousand students, increase in capitation grants and other feasible projects as major achievements chalked by government in just three years. Notwithstanding, the deputy Information minister said the Mills-led administration is committed to improving the living standards of Ghanaians Agyenim Boateng argued that an unbiased comparative analysis of the Mills-led government and the eight years regime of the NPP will floor the latter.
