The MTN Ghana Foundation has commissioned a three-unit classroom block and a library for Akatsi D/A Basic School and Tsito Senior Technical High School respectively. The lead mobile telecoms company in Ghana says it acknowledges that quality education can only be attained through the provision of the requisite infrastructure to enhance effective teaching and learning, hence the provisions.Durbars were held in both schools to mark the commissioning of the two projects. The Tsito Senior Technical High School Library was the first to be commissioned followed by the commissioning of the school block at Akatsi. The lack of adequate infrastructure in these schools were brought to the attention of the MTN Ghana Foundation through Madam Alice Gligui-Denueme, the first runner-up for the 2008 National Best Teacher Awards and other community members. Prior to this provision, the Akatsi D/A Basic School held classes for some pupils under trees. The Corporate Services Executive of MTN and Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, who commissioned the Library project, said that there is a positive correlation between patronising libraries and academic excellence. She said, “Schools in remote areas and especially indigenous communities are said to have challenges in literacy and numeracy. The school library is very important in efforts to close the educational gap and I believe this is a great opportunity for students in Tsito Senior High to excel in their school work”.She encouraged the students to take reading very seriously by visiting the library regularly during their leisure period. The library has the capacity to seat about 108 students at a time.In a related development, a three unit classroom block for Akatsi was commissioned by Mrs. Nabilla Williams, a board member of MTN Ghana Foundation. She said MTN Ghana Foundation found fulfilment in supporting investment in Ghana’s educational sector to help enrich the lives of community members. She said “these social investments are a way of giving back to society in appreciation for the support we receive in our business operations. MTN recognises the crucial role quality education plays in the socio- economic development of every nation”.
