Mali is likely to face sanctions from sub-regional body the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The country has been plunged into a coup after disturbances sparked by elements within the armed forces.
West African heads of state are holding an emergency meeting in Ivory Coast on developments in that country.
The meeting, called by Ivorian President and current chairman of ECOWAS Allasane Ouattara, is to work out a joint response to the coup.
Foreign Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni is attending the meeting with President Mills.
