PETITION PRESENTED TO THE INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE (IGP) BY FORUM FOR GOVERNANCE AND JUSTICE ON TUESDAY MARCH 27, 2012 CALLING FOR AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE RAID OF ASEMPA FM BY A MOB ON FEBRUARY 24TH 2012
Dear Sir,
The Forum for Governance and Justice (FGJ) hereby petitions your good office on this 27th day of March 2012 in our effort to promote good governance, protect the right to free speech as well as enhance media freedom.
The FGJ is a grouping of like-minded persons committed to influencing the growth of our democratic culture, social transformation and the delivery of justice. The Forum harnesses the expertise, experience and principled positions of its members to think through matters that bother on governance, human rights and respect for the rule of law. The FGJ is a non-partisan, non-religious, non-governmental and non-profit organisation whose mission is to promote and protect the right of the citizenry to justice and to improve governance in Ghana.
Sir, the FGJ believes that your good office needs to investigate the raiding of Asempa FM on February 24th 2012. We believe that it is in the national interest to conduct such an investigation and to prosecute those responsible to avoid the copy-cat effect (an action, carried out in imitation of another).
We call for this investigation also because our checks indicate that the management of the said station (Asempa FM) has not taken the time to report this disturbing occurrence to your outfit formally.
Sir, the seriousness of the Asempa FM incident on February 24th is reflected in the fact that it took workers of both Joy FM and Asempa FM to prevent the mob, led by the youth organizer of the NPP, Anthony Karbo and his predecessor, John Boadu, from entering the studio before security forces arrived.
It is our belief that to avoid and to end these types of dangerous situations in this election year, your good office must conduct an investigation into what Myjoyonline noted as “Angry NPP supporters besiege Asempa FM”. To facilitate your investigations, we have included video evidence as part of this petition.
We believe you will seriously consider the prosecution of those involved in this act of intolerance and lawlessness to serve as a deterrent to others. We believe that it is necessary to take bold action in this matter in order to avoid a copy cat effect.
Signed
Dr. Clement A. Apaak
