The former Minority Spokesman on Energy, Dr Kwame Ampofo says he resigned his position ahead of a major shake up in the Minority to lend support to former Vice President Mills.
In a short memorandum to the leadership of the Minority in Parliament, Dr Ampofo said he took the decision in order to join the campaign team of the former Vice President and aspiring NDC Presidential candidate Prof. Evans Atta Mills.
Dr Ampofo, who had held the position since 2001, told Joy News that he no longer hold back his support for Prof. Mills hence his decision to step aside as spokesman.
Moses Asaga takes over as the new spokesman.
The memorandum dated November 10 and which was also copied to the NDC National Chairman, the South Dayi NDC Constituency Chairman and the Parliamentary Press Corps, partly read as follows:
“I wish to humbly bring to your attention my desire to step down as ranking member for the select Committee on Mines and Energy. This decision has been arrived at by my burning desire to formally and openly throw my weight and support for Prof. Evans Attah Mills in his quest to represent the NDC party (as the flagbearer) in the 2008 Presidential elections.
“As you are aware, the rules of our party require that a member in leadership position cannot take sides with any of our candidates for the flagberaship of the Party. Therefore, my decision to join the campaign the campaign trail of Prof. Mills puts me in a conflict of interest situation. My conviction is so strong that I am left with no other alternative than to resign my position in Parliament as the Ranking Member for the Select Committee on Mines and Energy.”
Dr Kwame Ampofo however pledged his continued support for the work of the committee and said he would express his personal opinion on any subject matter of national interest concerning the mining and energy sectors.
