In Accra, Ghana’s capital city exists an island where birth and death are forbidden.
Indigenes of Faanaa, close to Bortianor in Accra have for years lived under the belief and dictates of a tradition, a shrine which frowns on birth and death.
If pregnant, one would have to travel outside the island to give birth and in case of death the family of the deceased would be fined and made to appease the shrine with goats and schnapps.
Joy News’ Jefferson Sackey visited the rather intriguing island and reports of the deplorable conditions there.
Edja, a resident of the island told Sackey he has been living on the island for 45 years and has never seen a dead body.
His mother travelled all the way to Keta to give birth to him. The island lacks the basic social amenities and the indigenes are crying for help.
Play the attached audio for the full details of the Jefferson’s report.
