You must have placed a call to the Call Center of your mobile service-provider to make one enquiry or the other only for you to be held on for sometimes as long as several minute. Should you be lucky to finally get through, the explanation from the call center attendant is “Sorry Sir/Madam “I’d been busily attending to other callers”.And guess what, the mobile operators are somewhat blaming it on what is described as fun callers. As the name depicts, fun callers call into call-centers not necessarily to make enquiries or have their complaints addressed but rather play games and indulge in one mischief or the other.
According to an Inbound Calls Manager at MTN Call Center, Augustine Osei Yaw Mante, this is only frustrating their efforts to deliver fast and efficient responses to their clients. He complained about the spate of the activities of these fun callers as alarming with some even going to the extent of proposing love to the call center operators most of whom are ladies.“They want to befriend ladies, ask for free credit and all that. We are trained professionals so we handle them. We explain to them that this is a helpline and we can’t give them their request”. Apart from the frustration and utter waste of time, this he says cost them as much as 5,000 cedis monthly”. he explained. The Head of Vendor Management Organization at Vodafone, Stephen Essien also explains to JOY BUSINESS they quantify every call that comes in. “ We put a cost on it so if people call the center and don’t ask have any business while people who have genuine issues, it a cost to us” he noted.
Mr Essien however continued saying they have however found ways to deal with the menace.“We use certain software to check fun callers. The system is designed in such a way that when a fun caller calls we prank the number. If this continues for about the seven times, you are automatically blocked from calling the call center or the attendants will notify the manager to take the right action”. he concluded.
